How often should my pet have an exam and blood work done?
The doctors at AHOC recommend that your pet be examined at least once a year to receive vaccine boosters and general health exams. If you have a young pet or a senior pet, then more frequent visits may be necessary.

At what age should I have my pet spayed or neutered?
It is recommended that pets be sterilized around 5-6 months of age. It is important to remember that spaying/neutering is a surgical procedure, and animals need to be mature to recover properly.

What are heartworms and how can I prevent my pet from getting them?
Heartworms are parasites that infect your pet's heart and cause severe health issues. They are transmitted by infected mosquitoes and the treatment for heartworms is intensive and expensive. The best way to prevent them is to give monthly or biannual medicine which comes in several forms that are provided at AHOC. Your pet must have a heartworm check before starting on a heartworm prevention.
